Avaben lies in the Greater Kascht, along the Royal Road where it crosses the River of Winter. It is known for its immense central fort, Anskettell Castle.

Is the dominion of Walter Anskettell, the Earl of Avaben, a crafty and wise member of the Anskettell family. The Earl is a wealthy and influential trader (in cloth and special dyes & pigments), and is in partnership with his brother, Uhredus Anskettell, a powerful mage.

Lord Marc Vasey (younger son of the Duke of Harl) and Lord Rowley Gozelinus (a noted ranger and the oldest son of the Marquis of Asa) are also resident in Avaben.

The settlement is managed by Lord Mayor Matteus Berryman. Primary trade goods are hops, grain, plant oils, and tree-grown mushrooms.

A local legend tells that Anskettell Castle was built by a giant in a day. Each year, the Earl sponsors a town-wide festival to celebrate this fanciful story.

The notorious mercenary Grand Enchanter Alivyr Ships operates from within Avaben.

From time to time, Nyllivul Ibsazi Hoarbeard, a wandering sage specializing in Metals and Stone, settles in Avaben for a period, before disappearing again.
