Barforos is the “Second City of Kalderesh” and is the financial capital of the realm. It is a large port city on the north coast of Kirvan, located in a commanding position on the Gulf of Anselmet, in a sheltered bay (Barforos Inlet) at the mouth of the Rosebeck River.

Barforos is known as the hometown of the Barforos Braves, one of the best and most competitive football teams in the realm. It is also famous as the birthplace of Lord Yannos Mair, the famed naval explorer who has led several major expeditions across Tem.

The nobleman Fulcher Tebald is the Duke of Kirvan. He has taken the title Duke of Barfor. His ancestral home, Castle Barfor, is in the city. Lord Tebald is an archmage of repute and his wise council is widely sought. The Tebald family is well-liked by the people of Barforos. Family members traditionally wear yellow cloaks; other citizens take great care to avoid such garments.

The highlight on the city’s social calendar is the magnificent Barforos Ball, an evening of splendour and celebration hosted by the Duke. One thousand citizens are drawn by lottery and invited to attend the celebration.

Barforos is ancient – it was founded when Kalderesh was just 10 years old. Rumours persist of an extensive underground labyrinth beneath the city.

In Barforos Inlet is the wreck of an extremely large galleon, The Wind of the Seas. It was built in 4318 by the then-Duke and was the largest ocean-going vessel of the time. It proved to be extremely difficult to handle. After a spectacularly rapid journey across the Gulf to Torbeck and back, the galleon ran aground and many people died. The Duke had the shipwreck magically preserved, as a reminder to a lesson dearly learnt (see sceen opposite).

The city is under the civic authority of Lord Mayor Jonathyn Tebald and his First Councillor Senior Sorcerer Olivya Threddler. Major export trade items are jewellery, pottery, fine porcelain, beer & ale, dried fish, and vegetables.

Barforos has a massive harbour, which is used by both commercial and military vessels. The original harbour was divided into two separate zones, but when it was greatly expanded, the two were merged. Commodore Aethan Richett is the most senior naval commander in Barforos. A large number of naval vessels are berthed here (see p 99), with an extensive naval academy overseen by Brigadier Nicholaes Hatter. Commander General Samytha Rainard is in charge of the naval base, which is similar in size to the naval base at Staven. Two divisions of sky helms are stationed in the harbour fort. A squadroon of Paladins is stationed in the city, garrisoned in the Grand High Temple of Razim.

Two Grand High Temples are found in the city: one to Razim and the other to Oohm. The Grand High Priest of Razim, Holiness Layla Harper, is a ruthless warrior-priest, said to be a tall woman with burning eyes, who killed her children. Her lieutenant, Lord Theodus Harper, oversees the military wing of the temple. The Oohmian Arch Priest, Lucus Yards, works hard to promote the general well-being of people and the nation, and is highly regarded amongst the citizenry. Lord Leonaerdo Bannerman is the champion of the High Temple. The Temple of Arawn, administered by Chief Priest Adym Polman, is the only other large place of worship in Barforos. A small fane to Sahir stands next to the Wizard’s Guild; it is overseen by the High Priests Leonus Poleman and Caerlos Ploughman.

Barforos is home to no less than four Great Guild Halls: Architects & Engineers (Maetho Soward), Armorers & Locksmiths (Yaksen Rock), Builders (Abigayl Dice and Olivyr Springs; see p 62), and Financial Transactions (Abrjia Innman).

Two Small Halls are home here: the Guild of Cobblers (Crystan Lynder) and the powerful Guild of Shipwrights (Astinus Shellman, Nicolus Derry, Uwyn Brownard, and Zoesia Shields).

Two other very influential guilds are the Guild of Wood Workers (Chloeia Boiles, Joceline Mair, Nicholaes Burgh) and the Royal Guilde of Artists (Mychael Pickman, Aelisabeth Mills, Chloeia Wheatly).

The Wizard’s Guild in Barforos is led by the archmage Caerlos Ploughman, and has attracted notable independent magi such as Lyncon Shellman and Maedisa Simmerman. At least a dozen other well-respected sorcerers and wizards are members of the guild. Not surprisingly, the worship of Sahir is not uncommon.

The well-respected mercenary and leading merchant, Swashbuckler Evylann Spiceman the Great, lives in an impressive castle just outside the city, and is engaged in the manufacture of armour and special equipment. It is rumoured that the Grand Arcane Myla Shwimmer has a stronghold near the city, but its location is unknown. The popular gladiator Astyn Bannerman is the battler champion in the city, and is one of its wealthy citizens. The Illuminants of the Black Sigil are represented in the city by the sword master Aevan Fishman. Dougal, Sword and Shield Champion, represents the Circle of White Adepts.
