The nis are a species of somewhat spider-like creatures that originated in the savannahs of north-western Dalarnum. They are vital, active, and physically powerful.

Their central body and brain is a 70-cm diameter orb, which has an abrasive covering, thinning near the top where the abrasive edges are interspersed with short stiff oily hairs.

From the body grows five 5-foot long, articulated legs, radially arranged, covered by short stiff oily hairs. These limbs have grasping paws with three short tough digits. This gives them poor grip and reduced dexterity. Their limbs are well-coordinated so the nis are able to move very rapidly, have very good balance and can perform impressive jump actions.

Five feeler-like dexterous tentacles, 6 foot long, 10-cm thick, sprout from the upper side. These end in delicate hair-pads, capable of fine manipulation through a gecko-like mechanism.

Nis have a large slit-like mouth, with three rows of small sharp teeth in each jaw. A ring of 50 eyes is set midway in the top hemisphere of their bodies, giving them exceptional sight.

The nis are carnivores, hunting in groups, chasing down prey by singling out an animal from its herd and bringing it down.

The smallest functional social unit is the herd, although for reproduction, short-term pair-bonding occurs. They have no complex buildings or other structures. Some dig caves, which are lined with stone slabs. Others float in watery swamps, and are essentially homeless.

Nis society is strongly caste-based, founded on a philosophy known as “The Five Paths”. They do not have many cultural or ethnic regulations beyond those needed for basic family-based and community life. These are legislative and practical in nature, and not morally informed. They have no interest in social causes and promote personal revenge above organized social justice. Duels and family feuds are the norm for settling disputes.
