A spell can only be scribed onto specially prepared paper of exceptional quality, made of vellum, parchment, or any similar substance. A sheet of paper is at least 1-mm thick. It may be written on both sides. A sheet measures 30 x 21-cm [A4] and counts as two standard pages.

=Spells=

A spell requires a number of standard pages equal to its level + d4. A first-level spell may thus need two pages (i.e. one standard sheet) or up to five pages (i.e. three standard sheets with one side unused). To scribe a spell costs 100 GP per level of the spell in inks and other consumable materials.

=Standard spell book=

A standard book measures 42 x 30-cm [A3]. It is 15-cm thick, and contains 150 sheets of paper, giving 600 standard pages. It costs at least 2,000 GP to make such a book.

=Travelling spell book=

The smaller travelling spell book measures 30 x 21-cm [A4]. It is 7-cm thick, and contains 70 sheets of paper, giving 140 standard pages. It costs at least 500 GP to make such a book and has an encumbrance of 100 cn.

=Scrolls=

A scroll is long piece of magical paper, 30-cm wide, of arbitrary length. The length varies, and is selected so that a useful number of standard sheets can be obtained. For each 21-cm of length, one standard page capacity is added. A probable maximum length is around 2 metres, giving about 9 standard pages. Note that a scroll cannot be written on both sides.
