Karafor is a small fishing village on the Gulf of Anselmet, west of Barforos in the direction of Bitafor.
Karafor harbour is remarkably large for such a small settlement. Despite being one of the youngest settlements in the kingdom, the villagers have a proud legacy as deep-sea fishermen. They use heavily-modified cogs, known as hunters, to hunt whales and other creatures in the depths of the Shining Sea. Their remarkable exploits are the stuff of legends.
A small fleet of conventional fishing boats also operates out of the harbour, used for fishing and other activities, such as kelp and ocean melon harvesting. The annual ocean harvest festival is a local highlight.
Because of the emphasis on whale hunting, Karafor has become the centre of rope production in Kalderesh. Before the pioneering work of sages and scholars in Karafor, all cities had substantial ropewalks, some up to 250 metres long! The innovation of the Karafor scholars allows incredibly short ropewalks (as illustrated) to produce rope of any length.
Some 12 km east along the coast is the wreck of the Musician of the Stars, a massive hunter that ran aground some four decades ago. A deserted sorcerer’s tower stands on a rocky island just off the coast, guarding the entrance to the harbour.
