Londesh is a large port city on the southern coast of Kirvan, on the Sea of Dolphins. It rivals Barforos in size, and probably exceeds it in architecture, as it is famous for its unique city gates and its beautiful mausoleum. Londesh is known as a peaceful city of learning, and home of the finest wines in the realm.
The city’s massive carved gates is possibly the largest prinwork installation in the kingdom. It was made for the then-marquis by the legendary craftsman Elinion the Elder, and took 25 years to complete.
Londesh has a large harbour, capable of handling many small-draft barges as well as deep-sea vessels. Many warehouses line the harbour perimeter. It is a major export hub of wine, vinegar, olives, oils, and related materials and products, sourced from across the Big Valley. Some goods are brought by perilous barge journey from Rishmont; others arrive by wagon along the Royal Road.
The extremely wealthy businessman and merchant, Sir Astinus Lane, owns many properties in Londesh (and elsewhere) and is a patron of the arts in the city. Probably the most famous artists that Sir Astinus sponsors is the renowned Circle of Ruby Fellows, the dance troupe known and admired across Kalderesh. They are based in the Red Theatre in the city, which is operated by the Royal Guilde of Artists (headed by Maelania Meadows).
The celebrity winemaker Ellia Simms lives in Londesh, and often travels to wine estates across the Big Valley. It is said that the King only serves Simms at his dinners and banquets.
An annual water festival and magic display, presented by the Guilde of Artists, is held in Londesh harbour and should be on any tourist’s bucket list.
A large city council effectively manages the many functions within the city. Renfry Alret, the Marquis of Londesh and a warrior provost of D’Aad, heads the city council. The mayor is Lyncon Heap, and other powerful council members include Graysus Bobbin, Graysen Oxbow and Zachaery Slaughter.
Major export trade items are wine, olives, grain, cloth and rare furs, overseen by Merchant Guild Master Ailbriht Rawlin.
Wine, made in the Big Valley, is transported to Londesh for distribution. Other vineyards supply grapes to the city where wine and related beverages are made for export. Big Valley is also famous for its olive groves.
“Londesh” in local slang means ‘salty place’, named for the brilliant white cliffs of salt crystals which still exist today along the coast.
A large military detachment is headquartered in the city, overseen by Brigadier Hazel Mayr. Its several divisions are spread out to strategic locations. A unit of paladins, commanded by Sir Horyce Seams, is stationed near the city council hall, adjacent to Laneder Court.
The only High Temple in Londesh is dedicated to D’Aad, headed by the Grand High Priest of D'Aad, Emilyan Waller. A second temple to D’Aad is overseen by the Aadite Arch Priests Paenelope Ferrimen and Robertus Waterman. A beautiful temple of Sahir is a prominent sight in the city, run by the Grand High Priest Masyn Streets. A well-regarded Academy of Magic, headed by Grand Arcane Julyo Appler, is adjacent to the temple.
The city’s magnificent, ancient mausoleum was modified centuries ago into a place of serene worship, and functions as a unique fane to Salaah, managed by Grand High Priest Maelya Silverman.
The Temple of Razim is famous for training military strategists, and its senior instructor, Lord Xandyr Pollen, is the traditional teacher of young royals and nobles who seek to excel in battlefield command and logistics.
The sprawling commercial sector in Londesh is dominated by the Guild of Brewers, Distillers & Vintners (headed by Santegus Brickhouse), the Guild of Coopers (Mygwell Towers) and the Guild of Wheel Wrights (Josayah Byrdman).
The Wizard’s Guild is led by Grand Archmage Kaelia Riggs, who oversees the reproduction of rare books and manuscripts.
Other powerful guilds operating in the city include the Guild of Forgers & Smiths, the Guild of Merchants, the Guild of Brothel Keepers, and the Guild of Wood Workers.
The Sword Lord Nycola Farmer is an acknowledged weapons expert and heads up the largest martial academy in Kirvan. She regularly advises the relevant guilds on the design and production of highly sought-after armour, weapons, and martial equipment.
Rumour has it that the evil Grand Conjurer Lyam Poleman, the Widow of Fate, operates from within Londesh.
Inthaleth Ibsazi Starfalcon of the Subtle Snakes is said to frequent the city, and to supply animal skins and rare furs to the Guild of Merchants.
Various organizations are headquartered (or represented) in the city, including the Circle of Ethereal Apostles, the Circle of the Glowing Flame, and the Illuminants of the Black Sigil.
Sharn, said to be a member of the Circle of White Adepts, is frequently seen in the city.
