Technology refers to the techniques and tools used to produce goods or services. The adjacent diagram illustrates the level of development of various technologies (transport, power, communication, etc.) as found:
- (1) on Tem and without the use of magic,
- (2) in Kalderesh with the use of magic, and
- (3) on a mythical planet called “Earth” somewhere in a fantasy spiral galaxy called “The Milky Way” during its early 21st century.
Dimensions of technology
Communication: The Kalderani use the written alphabet common to all Janee. Communication via written messages, couriered by runners, horse and raven, are employed.
Food production: Farming produces surplus food, using advanced irrigation techniques and basic land reclamation.
Information storage: Beyond memorization by individuals, handwritten letters and scrolls are common. Book production is not rare, and use is made of block printing, wood carving, and magic, to reproduce broadsheets and bills of notice for distribution to the communities. Persistent photorealistic images – known as sceens – can be created using an uncommon technique pioneered by Oberon the Blue. Extensive use of this rare and costly method is used to create this Guide.
Living environment: In addition to free-standing hardwood structures, adobe and stone structures are the norm. Multi-floor constructs may be found, and plastering is common. Baking ovens, aquifers, indoor baths, basic concrete, and glass windows are not uncommon and are common in all cities.
Manufacturing: Manufacturing with the use of hand tools of iron and steel is performed. Metal molding processes are just beginning to be used, and wire is found in very limited amount.
Medicine: Midwifery and herbology are commonly practiced, as is basic birth control (barrier prophylactics, rhythm method). Basic preventative medicine, wound cleaning, amputation, and basic first aid, is found. Rudimentary surgery and tools are employed. Basic medical schools and hospitals are found in the larger cities.
Transportation: Besides own-body locomotion and muscle-driven boats (rowing boats, canoes), horse riding is common, as are wheeled animal-driven land vehicles. A reasonable road network connects the major centres overland. Transport of goods is powered by horses, work dogs, mules and oxen. Bridge building is common. Kalderani make extensive use of waterborne transport. Sail-driven boats employ advanced sail and block & tackle technologies. Ships and barges are used for transport of goods and people between harbours along the coast and along rivers.
Warfare: Iron weapons and swords, maces, and longbows are common, as are studded leather and scale armour. Chain armour is not unusual. Light cavalry with lances, and armoured cavalry (with stirrups) are found in larger centres.
