The currency is based on a gold standard and is guaranteed by the Crown. The standard Kalderesh currency and denominations, derived from the Malanthean tradition, are summarised in the table below.

The Royal Mint is in Daernbeck, within the Palace of Steel. It produces the standard Kalderani coins and the trade bars, from metals alloyed with a special substance through a secret magical process making forgery impossible. The standard trade gem currency is manufactured in Camfor by the Starless Workshop. These official currency gems are cut to have seven facets. It is illegal to cut any other type of gem or stone with seven facets. A reservoir of such coins, trade bars and trade gems are kept in the Camfor Royal Treasury.

Promissory notes, etched on stone tablets and validated by a cleric of D’Aad, are sometimes used as currency, although they are more typically used as more flexible contractual instruments.

Although not considered a formal currency, precious stones and gems are legal tender. Money changers will evaluate and exchange precious stones and gems for standard currency, and are often able to cut raw stones to improve their value. Money changers will usually accept foreign coins and items of value in exchange for standard currency.

In some regions and instances, barter is still a common form of commerce.
