The duchy of Kirvan

The Duchy of Kirvan lies in south-eastern Kalderesh. It is the largest duchy both in terms of area and population size.

The eastern portion of Kirvan is predominantly grassed plains except towards the north which becomes roughlands at the foothills of the Krethes Mountains. Eastern Kirvan is famous for its cattle ranches on the plains, and vast sheep farms in the roughlands.

The Krethes Mountains mark its western border. Two other substantial mountain ranges are found in Kirvan: the Black Saw Mountains along the eastern coast, and the Kirnengo Mountains in the far south.

The vast Forest of Kascht (divided into the Greater and Lesser Kascht) covers about a third of the Duchy, and is home to three Druidic circles: The Soulful Circle, the Circle of Blood, and the Circle of the Wind. The Kascht occupies most of western Kirvan. The Royal Road passes through the forest and connects two major centres, Asafor and Avaben. The northern third of the Kascht is Crown land with the royal household near Ashkeep. Only two other small settlements, Spellmount and Roseland, lie within its dominion.

The sprawling Grey Swamp infests a large tract in the south-west of the duchy.

Off the eastern coast of Kirvan lies Federic’s Land, a cluster of islands separated from the mainland by the Strait of Tellinon.

The ducal seat of Kirvan is at Barforos, and the current Duke of Kirvan – historically known as the Duke of Barfor – is Fulcher Tebald (Lord Kirvan, or Lord Tebald).

The Crown owns two districts within Kirvan, while two provinces belong to the church. The Principality of Laneder is in northern Kirvan, and encompasses rich farmlands and nine settlements. The capital is at Laneder, ruled by HRH Prince Raimond of Kalder, Lord of Laneder. The Royal District of Kirvan is entirely within the Forest of Kascht, with three settlements within its compass. The district capital is at the Fist of Aalart, the castle of HRH Lord Aalart of Ashkeep, near the hamlet of Ashkeep.

Two church provinces are found in Kirvan. The Province of Arawn is in the south, encompassing the mineral-rich Kirnengo Mountains and its foothills. This somewhat isolated province is the stronghold of the Aranites. Its capital is Akarat, administered by Viscount Hervi Aeldredus.

A part of the Second Province of Razim is in northern Kirvan, straddling the border with the Duchy of Toreen. There are no settlements in this section of the province, and it is used for military exercises.

Two free cities are in Kirvan: Greymeadow (est. 4311) and Coldbridge (4488).
