Duchy of Toreen
Toreen, the “Spiritual Duchy”, lies in central and north-western Kalderesh. The ducal seat is in Torbeck, ruled by Bardolph Gifford, Duke of Toreen.
The northern limit of the duchy extends up to the crests of the Barobur Mountain Range. In the western part lies the sprawling Duskwood Forest. Ancient Duskwood occupies about a quarter of the entire duchy; the much smaller Hemden Forest is located to the north-west.
Duskwood is the most primordial of all forests in Kalderesh. Tracts of the forest have never been explored by humans. Four Druidic circles are found here: The Circle of Guardians, Circle of the Ancients, Circle of the Earthmother, and the Circle of Light. Hemden Forest is the most welcoming of all the druidic forests in the realm; within it’s protective embrace is the fastness of the Kalderani barbarians, and a settlement of centaurs.
Eastern Toreen is mainly grassland and low hills. The southern part of the duchy is well-populated, while the northern half contains but a single city (the free city of Stonemoor).
Settlements in western Toreen are clustered around Coth-Rom, the City of the Night. A large part of the surrounding land, encompassing much of Duskwood, is within the Province of Qidra. Lady Laylanna Rains administers the province from Themesk.
Eastern Toreen is anchored by Torbeck, the City of Storms. The Razimites own a parcel of land west of Torbeck, abutting the Qidranian lands. There are no Crown-owned lands in Toreen.
In east-central Toreen is the so-called "basket loop", eight agricultural settlements well-connected by a road network. These are Donnalaich, Falconcliff, Edgemead, Cordell, Greenbarrow, Hedgehaven, Lightfield, and Kleerby. To various degrees, these settlements are involved in producing horticultural goods (for food and industry) for export. Raw and processed goods, bundled in baskets and loaded on to wagons and barges, are transported to distribution points, the largest of which is Cordell.
There are two free cities in Toreen: Esterhedge Haven (est. 4375) and Stonemoor (4423).
